How the Periods and Respect Session Changed My View

When the joint session by Odser began, I honestly thought it would be like any other health class. I assumed periods were something only girls needed to learn about, and I felt a little awkward sitting in the room with them. I even wondered why boys had to attend.

But within a few minutes, I realised how important it was. The facilitators did not just explain what periods are. They helped us understand what girls actually go through every month. They spoke about pain, tiredness, mood changes and how difficult it can be to sit in class or travel when you are uncomfortable. They also talked about shame and teasing, and how even small jokes can hurt someone deeply.

For the first time, I understood why respect during periods matters so much. What stayed with me most was when the trainer said, “Periods are natural. Disrespect is not.” Hearing that made me feel responsible in a new way. I understood that boys must stop jokes, stop comments and stop making girls feel embarrassed about something completely normal.

The session made me realise that dignity is not about big actions. It is about simple behaviour — giving space, being kind, not staring, not teasing and supporting classmates when they need it.

By the end, I felt different. More aware. More mature. And more ready to contribute to a school environment where girls feel safe and respected, especially during their periods. I am glad I attended this session. It changed the way I see my role as a boy in this society.
